Brian found this article in the NY Times newspaper. Michael Pollen has been writing for them for years but recently wrote another book called In Defense of food: An eaters Manifesto. Ever since my environmental class I have been reading all these great books (Animal, Vegetable, Miracle; Michael Pollan's books) which have to do with food-growing your own food or if you can't do that then to eat locally. And also how to be a greener person!
So since the end of January Brian and I have been doing our best to eat only local fruits & veggies (which by the way isn't very much in Bellingham during the winter, potatoes, carrots, beets, onion, and sprouts. But now carrots and beets aren't available :(). We have gotten good at being creative with what we have. Every weekend we can't wait for the farmers market to see what veggies are being sold. Black sprouted kale is so wonderful!
I am encouraging everyone to look at what they are buying, look at the label-where is it coming from? Are you buying produce from Chile? Argentina? California? How long does it take this food to get to our shelves-how much gas are we spending to eat these things. So go support your local farmers markets (the food tastes so much better anyway!)
So if you want to borrow any of the books let me know, I will be glad to share! Here is the link to the NY Times article. Funny I posted this today and it is EARTH DAY!

I read a book about this same topic about three years ago. I love the idea of it and the ability to sustain yourselves as well as saving the "cost" of transporting all those things. Sadly, it is hard to eat exclusivly "local" for a family on a budget, but I'm planting a garden this year so its at least a start.
Good for you guys though, that is admirable. I'll pray for warm weather so your vegetable choices open up sooner rather than later!
